Passionate about the Peloponnese
‘Greece is a destination on everyone's bucket list, but have you heard about the fantastic region of the Peloponnese? Be prepared to be inspired’
When we think of Greece, we think of blue and white houses dotted on the hills, freshly caught seafood, ancient ruins to be discovered and people so warm hearted, you’ll feel right at home, it is definitely a place many dream of discovering. Many of us are familiar with such popular places in Greece such as the islands of Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and of course the capital of Athens, but there is a region with a little something special, that tends to be overlooked – The Peloponnese. This incredible region is one of the warmest areas in Europe during the European winter, meaning you can visit this area during these months, be completely alone with your surroundings and still have the sun shining above you as you embrace the crystal-clear waters.
We have all heard of the mighty Spartans, as well as places such as Olympia, Nafplion and Monemvasia, but did you know that they are all located in this dreamy region. The Spartans hailed from the Mani peninsula, which is the absolute best place to discover ancient ruins, old hilltop villages – one great example being Vathia, and absolutely breathtaking beaches and the people still living on the Mani are said to be descendants of the Spartans. From Athens, you will pass by the famous Corinth canal and Corinth Acropolis known as Acrocorinth, as you make your way into the Peloponnese region where more history, stunning coastal views and tranquil fishing villages will await you.
The Greeks are known to be very warm and welcoming, but the people of the Peloponnese are even more than that. It quite likely that a local will invite you to their home for a freshly caught fish supper, or may offer you some freshly baked goods if they see you in their area, it's just all part of what makes this truly authentic Greek region an absolute dream to discover. Whether you want to hike to one of the most southerly points of Europe – Cape Tenaro, visit the Volcanic Island of Methana or stroll through the quaint colourful town of Aereopoli, the choice is yours, and you certainly won’t be bored here. One thing is certain when visiting this region of Greece, is that you will be overwhelmed by how much there is to see here, that you will undoubtedly plan anther trip back, and you wouldn't be the first.
You’ll find that this region is so raw, wild and unique, that it is the kind of place everyone can enjoy, whether you are a solo traveller, travelling in a campervan, on a family trip or are on your honeymoon, it is such a magical land for all to find their piece of paradise. It is unlikely that you will discover it all in one trip, but if you find yourself back in this region, there are plenty of fantastic places nearby to discover, including the island of Lefkada – a paradise on earth, the island of Kefalonia – a charming Ionian Island or even the area of Porto Cheli – the stunning Greek Riviera, all of which are just as different from each other.
This region incorporates all the things we look for when travelling including the diversity of changing landscapes, delicious food, historic places, friendly people, and of course who can forget that unbelievable turquoise water. If the Peloponnese hasn’t yet made it to your list yet, it should certainly be considered for your next trip, especially if you're looking for that wow factor.
